As we discussed in the
Introduction to Japanese Patents section, your preferred source of
timely technical information is likely to be the unexamined patent
application publications (A).
Fig. 2 shows the 1st page of an unexamined patent application publication (A). You can tell by looking at field 12 at the top center of the page which shows 6 characters followed by "A".

Field 11 at the top right of the page is the publication number, Heisei 7-64048. Heisei 7 is the 7th year in the Heisei era and corresponds to 1995 in the Western calendar. Table 2 lists the correspondence between the Showa and Heisei eras to the Western calendar.
Table 2: Japanese - Western Calendar Correspondence The JPO database contains Kokai publications (A) starting from 1971 (Showa 46). Kokai publication numbers contain the year in which it was published followed by a serial number. Starting with the year 2000, the Western years are used in the Kokai publication (A) numbers.
